Getting Around Johannesburg

Most visitors to Johannesburg get about the city in four ways: rail, bus/mini-taxi, taxi and rental car. Pedestrian excursions are not recommended because of the typical distances and potential safety issues.

Travel advisers point out the city’s high crime rate. Theft is a particular plague of public transportation systems. Sightseers are cautioned to leave valuables at their hotels and to avoid bus and rail transportation if possible, especially at night. Public transportation mainly is used by local commuters.

Taxi service—while comparatively expensive—has been rated as the safest mode of transportation around Johannesburg. Taxis are available quickly upon phone request (drivers don’t prowl the city looking for customers). Mileage meters can prove questionable; discuss the estimated fare in advance. Drivers may need directions to outlying destinations.

Mini-taxi service ranges from very good to problematic. Some mini-taxis are in poor running condition. Safety tip: Don’t board a mini-taxi if you’re the only passenger.

Major car rental providers are available in Johannesburg. Your hotel can arrange a rental on short notice. Driving is left-lane. Renters are advised to use secured garages for parking—again, because of the crime rate.

The City of Johannesburg has been implementing transportation improvements. The Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit system was phased in beginning in 2009. It encompasses more than 300 kilometers of dedicated bus lanes throughout the inner city as well as hundreds of suburbs and nearby townships. Rea Vaya is designed to link bus, rail and taxi services. For example, a single ticket allows a traveler to combine multiple modes of transportation.

The city also has been upgrading all of its train stations. Meanwhile, it is working to improve its “parkades” for off-street parking and to better manage street parking. These enhancements should positively affect taxi service as well as private and rental transportation.

Numerous tours are available, but many visitors explore the city on their own. Besides tourist attractions, restaurants offer exciting menu options, local as well as international.
